About TOEFL
WHAT IS TOEFL ?
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a test used to determine a person's level of ability in English. This test is intended for people who do not use English as a mother tongue or in other words people in countries that use English as a foreign or second language. Generally, this test is used as one of the prerequisites for someone who wants to continue his studies or work in a country that uses English in daily communication. Besides TOEFL, there are still several other types of tests that are almost the same, namely IELTS, TOEIC and ESOL. TOEFL was developed and issued by ETS (Educational Testing Service) based in New Jersey, USA. This test was first introduced in 1963. At present there are 3 types of TOEFL tests issued by ETS, namely PBT (Paper Based Test) TOEFL, CBT (Computer Based Test) TOEFL and iBT (internet Based Test) TOEFL. Of these three types, PBT and iBT are often used.
Definition of TOEFL
a. PBT TOEFL
PBT is a form of TOEFL Test that uses answer sheets in the form of paper. This is the first test system issued by ETS. In PBT, the tests include listening, structure and reading. The range of scores given is 310-677. In addition, the time given to do this test is around 2-2.5 hours. But, since April 2006, this test has not been used anymore in Indonesia. At present, this test is still used in countries that do not have an iBT test system.
b. CBT TOEFL
CBT is a test that no longer uses paper. All tests are carried out on a computer using certain software. This test system emerged in 1998. The abilities tested included listening, structure, reading and writing. In this system, the range of scores is 0-300 with a processing time of 2-2.5 hours.
c. iBT TOEFL
The iBT test is the most popular and widely used test. This test system is also computer based, only this test is connected to the internet, thus, the test is done online. This test system was published and used in 2005, but was only used in Indonesia in 2006. The tested abilities included reading, listening, writing and speaking. Although this system is widely used, there are still a number of countries that use the PBT system.
Initially, the TOEFL was indeed used for those who wanted to continue their studies, apply for scholarships or work in other countries that use English as their daily language of communication. As time goes by, this test is growing and becoming one of the important prerequisites in the world of education and business. In Indonesia, this test has begun to be used by several leading universities as one of the entry requirements and requirements for being able to take a thesis, dissertation or thesis examination. Some companies also make the TOEFL test a prerequisite for applying for a job. In fact, this test is also used to get promotion promotions in employment.
To undergo the TOEFL test, so far there have been several official sites available in Indonesia. However, the results of this test do not apply forever. In general, test results are only valid for one or two years and someone can take the test many times. Generally, the test costs around $ 150 - $ 250. Test fees are generally different in each country. Because the price is quite expensive, there are currently many universities or language institutions that provide TOEFL test and pre-test training so that someone can prepare themselves before undergoing the actual test.

- TOEFL Listening Comprehension Test
In the first part of the TOEFL test, you must understand the forms of command in each part. Read carefully each answer choice on each question when the narrator reads the details of the directions and sample problems. You have to listen to concentration so that you can work on this type of problem in the first section.
Your listening skills are really needed to be able to do all the questions mentioned by the narrator. There are at least three parts that you must work on to have a high score on the Listening Comprehension test, which is the short conversation, longer conversation and talk section.
- TOEFL Structure and Written Expression Test
These types of TOEFL questions in the Structure and Written Expression section set specific strategies so that they can work smoothly. The key to working on this problem, among others, you must pay attention to the sentence that was questioned in the problem, pay attention and examine the answers available before choosing the right answer.
If you don't want to spend a lot of time on this part, you can read the words or groups of words underlined. If the Structure and Written Expression questions cannot be identified properly, always read the sentence of the problem thoroughly in order to find the right answer solution.
- TOEFL Reading Comprehension Test
At the final stage of the Reading Comprehension test, you should calculate the time allocation to work on the whole question. It is better not to spend too much time reading reading texts. Pay attention to the questions in the answers and remember the key without having to panic first if the theme of reading is not the discipline you are learning. Perform previewing to find out the topic of reading so that you have a picture of the problem.
Paying attention to the sentences in the first paragraph of a reading is very important. You can find out the main idea of the reading. You have to understand the context of the reading, do the scanning of data and fact information and do the inference or inference.
In addition, you must have full concentration when reading readings in order to draw information more accurately. It's a good idea to always improve your reading speed before the TOEFL exam is conducted.
The more the intensity of reading will make you also more quickly understand the information of a reading without having to read it in its entirety. You are more able to maximize the time to work on the problem without having to waste time to read readings containing long paragraphs.
